With fly rods, due to the parabolic action, only the length determines the maximum casting distance. So the longer the rod, the further you can cast and the bigger the waters can be. When buying a fly rod, pay attention to the weight, because if you spend hours in the water casting, you will be grateful for every gram less. There is no Cast weight for fly rods but only an AFTMA class (#) or also called AFFTA class, by the way, this applies to the entire equipment such as reel, line and so on.
For orientation purposes, class 0-3 is intended for Coarse fish and smaller Trout and Perch. Class 4-5 fly rods are standard for trout, chub and larger whitefish. If you want to outwit Perch and large Trout, the AFTMA class 6-7 is a good choice. For smaller sea fish such as mackerel, sea bass and co. as well as large freshwater predators, class 8-10 is ideal. The fly rods with class 10-13 and 14-15 are what for fierce opponents like salmon, tarpon and co.
